Alan Shearer says £30m Man City player would annoy him so much if he was his teammate

Manchester City’s squad will still be hurting after their FA Cup final defeat on Saturday to Crystal Palace.

The competition was the last chance Pep Guardiola’s men had to win silverware this season, but they need to get over it quickly, as Man City host Bournemouth on Tuesday night and require a win to secure Champions League football.

Alan Shearer questioned the mentality of Erling Haaland after the Norwegian striker shied away from taking Man City’s penalty at Wembley last weekend, however, the BBC pundit has some sympathy for the 24-year-old after what he watched against Crystal Palace.

The former Newcastle star was very critical of two City stars on the day and has now stated that playing with one of them would have annoyed him during his playing days.

Alan Shearer frustrated with Man City’s Savinho

Savinho has yet to set the world alight since moving to Man City last summer from Troyes as part of a £30m deal, which is not what was expected of the Brazilian after an impressive campaign with Girona last season.

Guardiola has not changed Savinho’s style, the player has admitted, but for some reason, the winger is not affecting games the way his talent should be, and after watching the 21-year-old in the FA Cup final, Shearer has admitted that playing with the City star would have annoyed him.

“Even the wingers yesterday were safe. It was like I was in the commentary, looking at Doku and Savinho and thinking, how many times did you actually go past your marker?” Shearer said on the latest episode of the Rest Is Football podcast.

“How many, your 1v1, how many times you actually, I mean, I looked at Savinho in the first half and thinking, you’ve got 20 minutes, you’ve never gone past the defender once.

“Yet the only time the defender Mitchell was past is when Bernardo Silva takes him on and gets the penalty.

“But obviously something has been said at half time because Savinho, within six minutes, the first six minutes, he goes past Mitchell three times and puts really good balls in the box. But then, for whatever reason stops.

“I mean, say whatever you want about Haaland, and he was clearly not anywhere near his best, and he wasn’t fit. But I tried to say in a sort of polite way yesterday in the co-commentary that sometimes it would do my head in playing with wingers like that.

“We’re thinking, just put the ball in the box, please get the ball in the box. And then it’s my job to get on the end.”

Man City fans have also been frustrated with Savinho this season, but that was to be expected during his first campaign at the Etihad Stadium.

The Brazilian is still very young and has plenty of time to develop into the player Man City expects him to be.

Alan Shearer would not like to be a Man City forward

Shearer’s comments were a continuation of the frustration the BBC pundit showed during the early stages of the FA Cup final on Saturday, as the former Newcastle striker was calling for Man City’s wingers to do something.

“I know only five minutes have gone, but Doku has had it on one side and Savinho on the other. Before the game, I had a chat with the guys; it can be so frustrating as a forward (playing with Man City),” Shearer said on commentary for BBC One.

“Make a point, at least put one ball in. I’m not saying every single time you have to do it, but at least you are making a point, are you going to get tight to me or stand off me.”

The wingers in Man City’s squad have been a source of frustration for fans of the Manchester club this season as they tend to play it safe too often, which may be a reason why Shearer thinks Jack Grealish has no future at Man City.

Guardiola is very unlikely to add new wide men to his squad during the summer, however, the legendary coach needs to find a way to make them more impactful, as the positions have always had key roles in the Spaniard’s past teams.
