Manchester City have had plenty of world-class players in recent years as the club rose from Premier League mid-table mediocrity to the very top of the game.
Since 2011, when Manchester City ended their trophy drought with the FA Cup, they have since added a multitude of trophies, including four Premier League titles in a row and a Treble in 2022/23.
Sergio Aguero’s move to the Etihad Stadium coincided with the club’s major rise to prominence, as he arrived from Atletico Madrid not long after their FA Cup win.
Indeed, Aguero has been such an icon at Manchester City – and in the Premier League – that he has now been put in the same bracket as Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona.

Alexis Mac Allister says Sergio Aguero really impressed him in Argentina training
Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister was the latest guest on Sky Sports’ Saturday Social Ranks, where guests are tasked with ranking a number of different topics from first to third.
When it came to the subject of Argentinian legends, the 2022 World Cup winner was asked to rank Messi, Maradona and Aguero.
“Love them three, but to be completely honest I think it’s quite easy,” said Mac Allister.”Messi, for me, is the best in history.
“Then Diego Maradona second… he’s a machine as well. Not just good on the ball but his personality, his mentality, was really, really good.”
Mac Allister apologised as he put Aguero third, making clear he’s a fan as he sung the Man City legend’s praises.
“I was really impressed with him when I first went to the national team,” said Mac Allister.
“He was there in that moment and in training, he was really really good.
“yeah there is no much to to say about this guy he was really really good but… Lionel and Diego…”
Sergio Aguero’s Manchester City career
Aguero joined Man City from Atletico Madrid in 2011 for a then club-record £38million.
It proved an absolute bargain for the Citizens, as Aguero went on to carve his name in Premier League folklore.
Aguero made 390 competitive appearances for City, registering 260 goals in all competitions, plus 64 assists.
The Argentina icon won five Premier League titles, six League Cups, one FA Cup and three Community Shields while at City.
Aguero was also responsible for one of the most iconic moments in football history, the goal against Queens Park Rangers on the final day of the 2011/12 season.
That goal enabled City to win their first league title of the Premier League era, at the expense of bitter rivals Manchester United.
Aguero left Man City in 2021 when his contract came to an end and joined Barcelona that summer, but then retired at the end of the calendar year on the advice of doctors due to heart issues.
