Manchester City are said to have enquired about Kai Havertz – and talkSPORT’s Ally McCoist believes he is a top player, who has just been playing out of position.

It was reported yesterday that City are considering the Germany international this summer.

He is the second Chelsea player City have been linked with ahead of the summer window, after Mateo Kovacic.

Apparently, he’s a player Pep Guardiola could look to sign.

The player has two years left on his contract, and Chelsea may be open to offloading him. He is also apparently wanted by Arsenal.

Havertz has divided opinion since he came to English football.

Many believe that he has not lived up to his billing.

But some others, including McCoist, reckon he does have quality and that he may not have been utilised correctly at Stamford Bridge.

And McCoist really threw his backing behind the player, believing that he is quality and that he has simply been played out of position at Chelsea.

He said: “I’m having him. I’m telling you right now! He’s been playing out of position. Without doubt he’s never a centre-forward.

“I watched him, I specifically watched him in a couple of games I went to. He just keeps coming towards the ball (from centre-forward).

“I think he’s a top player. I really think he’s a top player as a number 10 or a midfielder. A deeper role. No way (is he) an out-and-out centre-forward for me.”

Kai Havertz would become the top player everyone thought he was if he signed for Manchester City

It will be very interesting to see if there is movement on this in the coming weeks.

£150,000-a-week star Havertz has probably underwhelmed for most people since he signed for Chelsea.

He arrived for huge money, and he just hasn’t cut it at Stamford Bridge.

But you just know that if Pep Guardiola got his hands on him, he would see his fortunes turn right around.

Havertz was scarily good at Bayer Leverkusen. McCoist is right – he has not been used correctly at Chelsea. Him leading the line just doesn’t work and it’s surprising he’s had so many games in that role.

He is a brilliant, technical player and a great ball carrier.

If he was playing as a number 10 for City, after some coaching from Pep, he would be blowing people away.
