Ally McCoist says Man City have ‘very clever’ player who is now the best in the Premier League

Ally McCoist has named one Manchester City player as the very best in the Premier League this season.

Manchester City maintained pressure on Premier League leaders Liverpool ahead of this weekend’s meeting with a 3-1 victory over Manchester United on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag’s side actually took a surprising lead when Marcus Rashford blasted one in from out of nowhere but City always maintained control.

After seeing several chances thwarted or wasted, Phil Foden took matters into his own hands just after the break.

The 23-year-old smacked in his own screamer to level things up and then tucked away a smart finish to give Pep Guardiola’s side the lead.

Erling Haaland added a third in stoppage time to secure yet another Manchester derby win.

Foden earned all the plaudits and Ally McCoist says he’s been the best player in the league this season.

Ally McCoist praises Phil Foden

Speaking on TalkSPORT, McCoist said: “Phil Foden, I saw him in the left-back position after he scored it might have been at 2-1.

“Doing the defensive side of things, putting a challenge in, getting the crowd going.

“He just gets it and the freedom that he’s allowed along that front line, playing just short of Haaland or sometimes going ahead of him, he’s just very, very clever.

“I’ve said before, I don’t think there’s anybody in the league who takes the ball in better, whether it’s on the half-turn, letting it through him, quarter-turn, you name it he can do it.

“I thought second-half he showed without doubt in my opinion that at this moment in time he’s the best player in the league.”

Phil Foden in the running for Player of the Year

Given the competition he faces at his own club, let alone from every other side, Foden is doing very well to be in the running for the Player of the Year.

The ‘Stockport Iniesta’ stepped up to the plate when both Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne were out injured, ensuring City kept pace in the title race.

Foden might be outgunned in the Premier League scoring and assist charts but it’s the importance of the goals he’s scoring and all the other work that is making him stand out.

He has an incredible work ethic and impressed just as much in the derby for his tireless tracking back as he did for his goals. What a player.
