Ally McCoist says Man City once had an ‘incredible’ striker who was even better than Erling Haaland

Manchester City fans have seen some outstanding strikers at the Etihad Stadium.

From Carlos Tevez to their current hero Erling Haaland, it is fair to say City fans know what a good number nine looks like.

This season has been the Norwegian’s toughest since moving to Manchester with Man City fans even criticising Haaland for his performances on several occasions, yet the 24-year-old still has 30 goals and four assists across 30 appearances for the Premier League champions this season.

Man City were always confident of Haaland signing a new contract at the club and having put pen to paper on a new deal until 2034 in January, the striker is on course to become the best in the Manchester club’s history but for now, Ally McCoist thinks another was better.

Ally McCoist ranks Sergio Aguero higher than Erling Haaland

Despite all of Haaland’s success at Man City so far, the goals and treble-winning campaign were not enough for TNT Sports pundit McCoist to rank the Norway international higher than Sergio Aguero when asked to by the Daily Mail.

The Scottish pundit, who knows a thing or two about scoring goals, was asked to rank the best strikers in the history of the Premier League, with McCoist choosing Thierry Henry as his best ever to do it in England’s top flight.

However, further down the list, McCoist chose Aguero over the likes of Haaland, Didier Drogba and Robin van Persie.

The Argentinian footballer is held in high esteem by many in the football world, with Pep Guardiola labelling the 36-year-old ‘incredible’ to Sky Sports ahead of his time in Manchester coming to an end, and it seems that McCoist is another former player who has an admiration for the City legend.

Erling Haaland set to become greater than Sergio Aguero at Man City

Aguero wanted to stay at Man City for another year before leaving the Etihad Stadium in 2021 and in many people’s minds, it may be seen as impossible for Haaland to become greater than the Argentine after his QPR moment back in 2012.

However, there comes a point where the numbers come into effect and Haaland’s have been simply ridiculous since moving to Manchester in 2022 with the Norwegian star already halfway to matching Aguero’s total at City in just three seasons.

Haaland is currently out injured and is looking to return before Man City’s season comes to an end as Guardiola’s side push for a place in next season’s Champions League, as well as another FA Cup title.

On a personal level, the 24-year-old will be looking to add to his legacy by bringing this trophy back to Manchester and in an ideal world, he will do so by scoring some crucial goals along the way.
