Alvaro Morata shares what he is now willing to do to ensure Man City’s Rodri wins the Ballon d’Or

Alvaro Morata seems to be a huge advocate for Rodri winning the Ballon d’Or.

After Spain’s 2-1 victory against England in the Euro 2024 final, Jan Vertonghen stated that it was guaranteed that he would win the award.

When quizzed about Morata claiming that Rodri lacks marketing and if he was marketable, he would have won the award last year — the midfield maestro revealed that not winning such awards does not bother him.

Spain’s captain might have a point as Rodri did not even get nominated for the 2023/2024 Premier League Player of the Season award — despite arguably having the best campaign of his career where he showcased that he is the complete midfielder.

Morata reveals measure he is open to taking so Rodri wins Ballon d’Or

The Manchester City anchor fits the bill of a potential Ballon d’Or winner.

As far as silverware goes, Rodri won the Premier League and the European Championship — winning the Player of the Tournament award in Germany as well.

In terms of his own displays, City’s number 16 was outstanding for both club and country — consistently pulling the strings at the base of midfield and proving to be one of, if not both sides’ most impactful performer.

During Spain’s trophy parade to celebrate them winning Euro 2024, Morata revealed that he is willing to create an Instagram account to make Rodri more marketable in an attempt to ensure he wins the Ballon d’Or — in a video shared by GOAL.

“We have to open an Instagram account to help him claim a huge individual award because he deserves it.”

“Because with his personality and his game, he carried us all to win the Euros.”

Rodri does need to be more marketable and this measure would help

While the statement of intent from Morata might be viewed in jest, the truth is that for players to win the Ballon d’Or, like Rodri in this instance, marketing is key.

Especially in an area where social media plays a crucial role in perception.

The Ballon d’Or, despite being incredibly prestigious is an award that is often viewed as a bit of a popularity contest.

As a result, attacking players tend to take home the awards.

For a defensive midfielder like Rodri to win the award, perhaps him creating any account on social media to communicate with his fans across the globe could be a measure that helps his case.

With how understated the 28-year-old is, he might be against making such moves and exclusively focus on things on the pitch.
