Mateo Kovacic has said that one of the biggest reasons why he agreed to a transfer to Manchester City is due to the Pep Guardiola factor.

Speaking to the club’s official YouTube channel in his first interview, the Croatian midfielder was asked about how much of a role did the prospect of working with Guardiola play in his decision to join City.

Unsurprisingly, Mateo Kovacic lauded Pep Guardiola and admitted that his presence was one of the most influencing factors behind his choice to sign for Manchester City.

Mateo Kovacic cites Pep Guardiola factor as key in decision behind Manchester City transfer

Branded as ‘unbelievable’ by Manchester Evening News, the two-time treble winner’s status as the best manager in the world is undisputed, with Ilkay Gundogan claiming that he is the greatest coach he has seen in his lifetime.

Perhaps what would entice players to join City even more is the fact that apart from Guardiola’s luring presence, it is fascinating to see how he continues to somehow improve as a manager season after season.

Mateo Kovacic is clearly a huge believer in the genius of Pep Guardiola, as he credited him as a huge reason behind his decision to join Manchester City.

“One of the biggest things [why he joined Manchester City was due to Pep Guardiola]. I came to this great club with an amazing manager to learn and to improve my understanding of football, and to try to be the best version of myself. So, it was a huge part, of course and like I said before, it’s a huge pleasure to be here and to try to improve and learn.”

It would be a red flag if a player chose not to work under Pep Guardiola

While players could snub Manchester City due to understandable reasons, as Mateo Kovacic implies, the opportunity to be coached by Pep Guardiola is rare.

And as a result, to turn down such a golden chance to learn from one of the game’s greatest ever minds would be a baffling decision.

Guardiola’s near-flawless track record of taking every player to the next level, innovating the sport and winning trophies is second to none and to not be dying to work under him would be simply nonsensical.
