Andy Townsend has said that he firmly believes that Pep Guardiola is the greatest coach in the history of the game.

On talkSPORT (14/11/2023), the commentator and pundit lauded the Manchester City boss.

Andy Towsend says Pep Guardiola is the “best coach” of all time

“He’s the best coach I’ve ever seen. The best coach! Now I say coach because people always come on and we always talk about Sir Alex [Ferguson] and other great managers. Different eras, different type of thing”, Andy Townsend initially said about Pep Guardiola on talkSPORT.

He continued, “I’m talking about someone who actually sets a team up. He’s almost created a complete style on his own, the way that they play.”

Andy Townsend went on to emphasise that other teams that try to emulate the Pep Guardiola blueprint have failed to do so up until now.

“And we see things from his team that others are trying to emulate but they can’t do it. He must sit there laughing in his office half the time because his team and his players can do what he wants them to do and others, he’s watching them try it and he’d be going, ‘Have a look at them! What’re they doing there?’ And it’s true, isn’t it? He gets his team doing things that others can only kind of dream about.”

Hailed as a “special coach” by Ilkay Gundogan, the Spaniard is always mentioned in the same breath as some of the best coaches the game has ever seen.

Recently, even Mauricio Pochettino said that the two-time treble-winner is up there with the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Carlo Ancelotti as the greatest manager to have ever graced the sport.

How early Pep Guardiola hangs up his boots could decide this debate

While many side with Andy Townsend by crowning Pep Guardiola as the best coach that football has ever seen, others side with his adversaries in this very debate.

That is simply the nature of discourse around any such hotly-contested debate across all sports.

Perhaps the primary factor that could settle the constant back-and-forth around which manager sits at the top spot may depend on how long Guardiola decides to manage at the elite level.

Managerial greats such as Sir Alex Ferguson, Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho to name a few have coached for a far longer time than the Spaniard.

Looking at the nigh-on flawless track record Pep Guardiola has had in his career so far, if he matches other such all-time greats in terms of longevity, the debate could become one-sided over time.

For the time being, Guardiola looks set to maintain his focus towards reigning supreme at Manchester City.
