‘As soon as I heard’… Man City player admits he was looking to leave in the summer but Pep Guardiola wanted him to stay

Manchester City have a track record when it comes to moving some of their younger players out on loan.

For example, previous summer transfer windows have seen City send the likes of James McAtee, Callum Doyle and Luke Mbete among others to other clubs on temporary loan deals.

It’s not just academy players who leave on loan either, as Kalvin Phillips said he joined Ipswich Town on loan from City to get regular game time.

Following the latest summer window which once again saw City loan out a handful of players from their senior squad and the youth ranks, one player has now revealed that he was tempted to do the same until Pep Guardiola intervened.

Jacob Wright admits he was tempted to leave Man City in the summer

In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Jacob Wright said this on the subject of him looking to leave City on loan during the previous summer transfer window.

He said: “There was obviously temptation – there always is going to be – but when the manager and staff around him want you to stay and be around that first team there’s not much of a choice.

“There’s no temptation any longer when you get the information that they want you to stay and be around it because they see you as someone that could be around it.

“The temptation went out the window as soon as I heard that – I was staying for the season.”

What has been said about Wright?

To give some insight into what sort of player he is, journalist Sam Lee shared what he was told about Wright after seeing the midfielder make his senior City debut in January’s 5-0 FA Cup win over Huddersfield Town.

He said: “I’m told he has great technique and vision, a ball-playing central/holding midfielder, really good attitude. Not bad then.”

Despite Guardiola’s insistence on keeping hold of the 19-year-old for this season, Wright has only made one appearance for City.

This came during their 2-1 win over Watford in the third round of the Carabao Cup at the Etihad Stadium in September.

After replacing fellow academy star Nico O’Reilly in the 73rd minute, Wright had 24 touches of the ball in total.

He also completed 21 of the 22 passes he attempted as well as making one tackle and winning the one ground duel he was involved in.

Now that the teenager has highlighted how he was able to get rid of his temptation to leave on loan after learning that Guardiola wanted him to stay, this showcases how eager he is to make the most of any opportunities he gets to play in the first team.
