“What a player. What a guy. A Manchester City legend.”

It’s safe to say that the Portuguese international summed up every City supporter’s thoughts and feelings about their treble-winning captain in a nutshell.

Ilkay Gundogan is an irreplaceable figure at the club in so many ways

Many would perhaps scoff at this very idea due to how Pep Guardiola’s men always find a way to replace their biggest legends, season after season.

However, as Bernardo Silva implied, Ilkay Gundogan has not just been an extraordinary player for Manchester City but his character as a captain of the side is also one that is rare.

Joining the club as the first signing of the Pep Guardiola era, the five-time Premier League winner knows the ins and outs of the club, which is why he commands as much respect as he does.

To find a player that can fill Gundogan’s boots in central midfield is already a tall task.

But to also replace the intangibles that the former Borussia Dortmund technician brings to the table seems next to impossible.
