“Chaos”: How Guardiola reacted after being told about report which claims £45m player might leave Man City

Pep Guardiola has now commented on the situation involving Kalvin Phillips at Manchester City.

The 52-year-old spoke about the England international in his press conference earlier on Friday.

So, what did Pep Guardiola say about Kalvin Phillips? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the 27-year-old himself said “I want minutes” after starting England’s 3-1 over Italy on Tuesday.

It came after a story from ESPN claimed that Phillips is considering his future at Manchester City, following a week in which he was still overlooked for a role in the starting XI despite Rodri’s red card.

The Northern Echo believe Newcastle will make a move if it becomes apparent that the Manchester City No.4 wants to leave in January.

Now, Guardiola has spoken about Phillips.

As quoted by the Manchester Evening News, the Spaniard said: “No, no. The transfer window is over. We are here together. When we need a game with transitions or need chaos, Kalvin is perfect. At the winter time he will be here. The transfer window, nobody knows.”

Phillips has only made two Premier League starts since his £45m move from Leeds United in July 2022.

Guardiola comments explain why Kalvin Phillips rarely plays for Manchester City

Guardiola’s comments about needing Phillips for games with a lot of transitions makes for interesting reading.

According to The Athletic, Guardiola and his staff do not have much faith in the £45m man’s ability to play short, quick passes or receive the ball from Ederson, something Rodri contrastingly excels at.

Therefore, the comment about needing Phillips to provide “chaos” in transitions suggests Guardiola only truly values the midfielder’s superb long-range passing skills, which can get Manchester City on the attack out of nothing.

However, the problem there is that Manchester City are able to control games so effectively, these transitions are few and far between, effectively nullifying the man nicknamed The Yorkshire Pirlo.

It remains to be seen whether Guardiola’s comments are enough to keep Phillips happy – so be sure to keep an eye on this developing situation.
