The Premier League has seen many top goalscorers feature in the competition over the past 30 years.

One of the top flight’s most recognisable goalscorers is Alan Shearer, who currently holds the record for most Premier League goals scored.

Specifically, the Englishman bagged 260 league goals in 441 Premier League games, winning one title in the process.

Now though, another former top-flight striker and one of Shearer’s former teammates has been sharing his thoughts on one current Manchester City player and how he compares to the former Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United star.

Chris Sutton picks between Erling Haaland and prime Alan Shearer

After seeing Erling Haaland score his second hat-trick of the season in City’s 3-1 win over West Ham United, Chris Sutton had this to say in a recent edition of It’s All Kicking Off when asked who he thinks is better out of Haaland or Shearer.

He said: “Well, Haaland’s still got a bit to go to get to Shearer, hasn’t he? So Shearer.”

Haaland should be looking at Shearer’s goal record

With 69 Premier League games under his belt since joining City back in 2022, Haaland has found the back of the net 70 times.

In his debut season, the 24-year-old won the Golden Boot by bagging 36 goals in 35 league games.

This was then followed up by the Norwegian scoring 27 goals in 31 league outings, winning another Golden Boot as a result.

After the recent game at the London Stadium, Stephen Warnock claimed that Haaland could break Shearer’s record if he stays at City for the foreseeable future.

Given the rate at which he’s been banging the goals in this season, the centre-forward is well on his way to potentially winning a third consecutive Golden Boot.

Looking beyond that, it’s definitely possible that Haaland could go on to break Shearer’s goalscoring record in the Premier League if he keeps his fitness up and stays with Pep Guardiola’s side.
