Manchester City have made their fair share of signings from Everton over the years – some good, some bad.
John Stones has become a world-class player at Man City after signing for Everton all those years ago.
Meanwhile, Joleon Lescott won the Premier League with City after arriving from Goodison Park, and Richard Dunne became a City legend in his own right after joining from the Toffees.
It’s been a while since City pinched any players from Everton, but speaking on It’s All Kicking Off, Chris Sutton has suggested that Everton do currently have a player who is good enough to get into this City side.

Jordan Pickford is good enough for Manchester City
Sutton was discussing Jordan Pickford’s performances for Everton, pondering why the England international is never considered by top clubs.
Sutton touted Pickford as a good option for numerous sides, noting that he thinks he’s a better goalkeeper than Ederson.
Ederson has been criticised this season for his performances, and City may look to replace Ederson before too long,
“I think he’s better than Ederson. I think Ederson’s another one of those Manchester City players whose form has dipped. So, yeah, I think he’s matured over the years, Jordan Pickford, and he’s an outstanding goalkeeper,” Sutton said.
Ederson compared to Jordan Pickford
Pickford is a top goalkeeper, there’s no doubt about that, but, as with any goalkeeper, it’s hard to directly compare these two.
Ederson plays for a much more ball-dominant side, so faces fewer shots, while, with all due respect to Everton, Pickford has often lacked help from his defence.
The stats do paint an interesting picture, here, and, according to the numbers, Ederson remains the superior goalkeeper in a lot of ways.
| Ederson | Jordan Pickford | |
| 21 | Games | 31 |
| 23 | Goals conceded | 38 |
| 26 | Expected goals against | 38 |
| 3 | Expected goals prevented | 0 |
| 0 | Penalty saves | 2 |
| 0% | Penalty save percentage | 100% |
| 88% | Passing accuracy | 65% |
| 64% | Long passing accuracy | 46% |
As good as Pickford is, Ederson has been one of the best in the world for a long time, and while his powers are waning somewhat, he’s still a supremely talented goalkeeper.
Pickford has even praised Ederson in the past himself.
It would be interesting to see what Pickford can do at a top club, but perhaps Ederson should remain as City’s number one for the foreseeable future.
