Jamie Carragher has said Liverpool are in urgent need of a player like Manchester City lynchpin Rodri.

In his column for the Telegraph, the Liverpool legend addressed how much of a commodity the No.6 position has become in football.

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool would die to have a player like Rodri at their disposal.

Jamie Carragher says Liverpool really need a player like Rodri

Branded as ‘truly elite’ by Breaking The Lines, the treble-winner was crowned as the best defensive midfielder in the world by Jose Enrique.

For the last two seasons, the 27-year-old even has a case for being the outright best midfielder on the planet, considering the extraordinary standard and consistency he has operated with.

Now, Jamie Carragher has said that Liverpool would kill for a defensive midfielder like Rodri to join them.

“Now the leading teams play so much higher, the defensive midfielder must be multi-faceted, athletic enough to cover most of the pitch and quick enough to track back, and make recovery tackles to stop counter-attacks. Their passing ability must also be such to enable a swift move from defence to attack. Perhaps most importantly, he must be ‘press resistant’ and able to withstand the pressure when opponents come hunting in packs to win possession higher up the pitch”, he wrote.

Considering Arsenal have signed Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo has recently become a Chelsea player, Jamie Carragher still believes Liverpool need an anchor like Rodri in the middle of the park.

“In essence, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool have spent the summer hunting the complete footballer who can fulfil all those requirements. Manchester City already have him in Rodri. It is no wonder those identified for the same role are commanding such an extraordinary fee.”

Jamie Carragher is spot on as the Spaniard is the gold standard for defensive midfielders in the world and not just Liverpool but any team in the world would reserve a spot in the middle of the park for him to occupy.
