Craig Burley left baffled by one player’s decision to join Manchester City

Craig Burley has questioned one Manchester City player for his decision to join the club.

Manchester City are known for being very good in the transfer market.

The club have done many excellent deals over the years, and sporting director Txiki Begiristain and his team are some of the best people at what they do working in the game today.

They are a big reason behind City’s success under Pep Guardiola.

As good as the Spaniard is, he needs the right tools to work with and it is so important that he has such a brilliant team working above him.

It is rare that City don’t get it right, and one example of this was the transfer of Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips joined City two years ago in a £45 million deal from Leeds United, and pundit Craig Burley has now given his thoughts about the midfielder.

Phillips has made just 31 appearances for City since signing, with most of those appearances coming as a substitute.

Midway through last season, he moved to West Ham United on loan as he was still not getting minutes under Pep, but it was a disastrous spell for the Englishman.

Phillips played so poorly that West Ham decided against turning his move permanent, and Phillips also didn’t get called up to the England squad for Euro 2024.

Phillips’ decision to join City in the first place is one that looks quite strange today.

Pundit Craig Burley has been speaking about his decision. He said on ESPN UK: “Kavin Phillips is actually a very good player and he made the wrong move and went to City.

“Can’t blame him for it, but if he looked at the bigger picture, maybe he would have realised his game time would have been as limited as it was. And he has certainly, certainly gone back the way now.

(He) went out on loan to try and revive it, and it clearly didn’t happen. I think West Ham were hoping the Phillips one might have been a permanent deal, but it was so bad, so bad I don’t know what the lad’s going to do.”

Phillips transfer turned out to be a mistake

It is very easy to look at the situation now and say that City signing Phillips was a mistake.

Burley suggests that it was a mistake from the off. But Phillips – who is a target for Fulham and Everton – had been a top player at Leeds and was playing some of the best football of his career at the time of his move to the Etihad.

He had the potential to be a successful signing.

Yes, Rodri was firmly established at City, but there was still a decent chance of him making an impact. But granted, the Spaniard’s form certainly did not help Phillips.

He got unlucky early doors with an injury, but then just couldn’t establish himself, with the standards at City seemingly a shock to his system.

It just hasn’t worked out, and hopefully now there will be a resolution that suits all parties.
