Erling Haaland is banging in the goals for fun for Manchester City, but it could have been Harry Kane had Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy sold the striker to the Citizens.
Manchester City signed Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2022.
Haaland has been a massive success at City already.
It is not a coincidence that City won the Premier League, the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup in Haaland’s debut season.
The 23-year-old Norway international striker scored as many as 52 goals in all competitions last season.
Haaland has scored 11 goals and provided two assists in 11 Premier League games and has scored two goals and given one assist in three UEFA Champions League matches this campaign.
However, before City signed Haaland, they tried to get Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur.
Back in August 2021, City manager Pep Guardiola said that he wanted to sign Kane, as quoted in The Guardian.
Guardiola added that City were trying to negotiate a deal with Spurs for the striker.
However, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy refused to sell the England international star at the time.
Kane stayed at Spurs and moved to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023.
Daniel Sturridge on Erling Haaland and Harry Kane
On Monday evening, former City striker Daniel Sturridge was speaking about Haaland and Kane on Sky Sports.
The former Chelsea striker gave his take on who is better at the moment.
Sturridge said on Sky Sports: “H is the most complete. I don’t think that’s a discussion. I think he’s the most complete.
“I think, Haaland, though, he brings a fear factor.
“I have asked a few of my former teammates, people I have played with, about this.
“I feel like, the defenders, for me, they have a different level of fear and power of Haaland.
“I think when they are playing against H, they know what he is capable of, all-round game, different class.
“They know that he’s going to score goals.”
“The former Liverpool striker added: “I don’t think at this stage Haaland’s a better finisher than Kane.
“I would say Kane both feet probably still edges Haaland right now.”
My View: Erling Haaland a better option than Harry Kane for Manchester City
While I have no doubt that Harry Kane would have been a great signing for Manchester City, I believe that Erling Haaland will prove to be a better acquisition in the long run.
Kane is a Premier League legend who banged in the goals left, right and centre for Spurs.
The England international has taken the Bundesliga by storm.
Kane has scored 15 goals and given five assists in 10 Bundesliga matches for Bayern Munich.
The striker has also scored two goals and provided two assists in three UEFA Champions League games for Bayern this season.
But, Kane is 30 now.
Haaland is just 23.
Kane is in his prime.
Haaland is just starting.
Just imagine how good the Norwegian will be in three or four years’ time.
It’s frightening.
