Darren Bent unsurprised by rumours linking £45m Newcastle star to Man City

Darren Bent says he is not surprised that there has been speculation linking one Premier League winger to Manchester City.

Manchester City are yet to do any business this summer, but the expectation is that things will pick up now.

Euro 2024 and the Copa America are about to finish, meaning there is likely to be more activity involving players who have been at those tournaments.

It is going to be really interesting to see what City do.

While the club sealed a fourth straight Premier League title in 2023/24, there will likely be a desire to strengthen in a bid to win more trophies in 2024/25.

In recent days, Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon has been linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium, which doesn’t surprise Darren Bent one bit.

Gordon enjoyed the best season of his career to date in 2023/24 for Newcastle, after joining the Magpies in January 2023.

He made 48 appearances and scored 12 goals. He also laid on 11 assists, and established himself as one of the most dangerous wingers in the Premier League.

His form led to an England debut back in March, and Gordon was then included in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad.

It was recently suggested that Liverpool were interested in Gordon. Back in May, it was claimed that City ‘really liked’ Gordon and there has been more speculation linking him to the club in recent days, and former Premier League striker Darren Bent gave his take on talkSPORT yesterday evening.

He said: “It must be incredibly difficult, and even though Newcastle is a big club, when a side like Manchester City comes calling and a coach like Pep. You know what Pep can turn you into, so it doesn’t surprise me.

“If Pep sees something in Anthony Gordon that he likes, then it’s going to be incredibly difficult if they really do pursue that and for them to keep him.”

Gordon would be a lot of fun at City

It doesn’t feel too likely that City will make a move for Gordon this summer, especially as Newcastle have now sorted their PSR issues.

But this would certainly be a fun signing by the club if it did happen.

Gordon, who cost Newcastle £45 million in total, has proven to be excellent business for the Magpies since making his move there from Everton, and that speed and dribbling he has makes him extremely dangerous.

Jeremy Doku came to City last summer and enjoyed a solid first campaign at the club, and there is no reason why Gordon couldn’t also flourish, even though a lot of teams set up with a low block against City.

Maybe if a wide player – such as Bernardo Silva – leaves City will consider a swoop.
