David Ornstein shares what he knows about Matheus Nunes and Atletico Madrid now

Manchester City and Atletico Madrid likely share a strong business relationship.

City signed the likes of Sergio Aguero and Rodri in 2011 and 2019 respectively from the Spanish giants.

Aguero is arguably the club’s greatest-ever player while the latter is already, if not on his way to attaining legendary status at the Etihad Stadium.

However, Pep Guardiola’s side also Julian Alvarez to Diego Simeone’s side — who is well-capable of lighting La Liga up in his debut season at the club.

Both clubs have handed each other the chance to sign top players in high-profile deals.

Considering Manchester City and Atletico Madrid did business this summer, it would not be a surprise if they engaged in many more deals in the near future as well.

Ornstein provides Man City star to Atletico Madrid transfer revelation

At City, Matheus Nunes is one player whose future seems as if it especially at risk since Ilkay Gundogan’s farewell return.

Signed for £54 million from Wolves last summer, the Portuguese international was one of the club’s few deadline day acquisitions.

However, the 25-year-old seemingly failed to make too much of an impression on Pep Guardiola.

It seems like the former Sporting CP’s chances of starting are rare in a side that features Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, Mateo Kovacic and Bernardo Silva as options in central midfield or behind the striker.

However, David Ornstein has wrote on X that Atletico Madrid are “exploring” a season-long loan deal to sign Nunes this summer.

City are yet to receive any offer or even conclude whether they are prepared to make the Premier League champion available to sign either on loan or permanently.

The side from the Spanish capital are interested in Nunes.

Interesting to see if Matheus Nunes is sent on loan to Atletico Madrid

If Manchester City decide to send Nunes on loan, his career at the club can be considered all but over.

Such a decision could indicate that Pep Guardiola is no longer interested in helping the ex-Wolves dynamo develop, despite signing for City a year ago.

However, if Nunes is kept at the club, such a call could imply either that he has been kept for the purpose of maintaining a certain degree of squad depth or to potentially assess if he can redeem himself this season.

The midfielder will consider any of the outcomes a win-win situation as he could get more playing time at Atletico Madrid or be given a chance to win Pep Guardiola’s trust at Manchester City.
