Demba Ba says Man City have a player who genuinely played exactly like Riyad Mahrez in 2-0 win against Chelsea

A certain Manchester City player was given a massive compliment by former Chelsea striker Demba Ba.

Pep Guardiola’s men kickstarted their 2024/2025 Premier League campaign in style with a 2-0 win against Enzo Maresca’s side.

Erling Haaland and Mateo Kovacic were on the scoresheet to seal a hard-fought victory for City at Stamford Bridge.

Haaland opened the scoring after taking a few touches inside the box before going on to dink the ball above Robert Sanchez into the back of the net.

As for Kovacic, he returned to West London to haunt his former club by shimmying past the likes of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez before curling the ball past Sanchez.

Ba makes fresh Mahrez comparison about Man City star in Chelsea win

The Sky Blues will be over the moon to have started their campaign with a victory, considering the last time they played a ‘Big Six’ team away from home on the opening day of the season, they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

However, City seemed like they were in no mood to drop any points as they matched Arsenal’s result against Wolves on Saturday.

Amongst the visitors’ impressive performers on the day, one of them was Savinho.

The Brazilian international, who was signed for £33.6 million (£21 million plus £12.6 million in add-ons) initially started on the left-wing before being shifted to the right flank.

It’s safe to say that Demba Ba was left impressed by Manchester City new-boy Savinho, likening him to Riyad Mahrez as he shone in his side’s latest win against Chelsea.

Ba wrote on X: “I didn’t know [Riyad] Mahrez was back at City.”

Considering Savinho views Mahrez as his “inspiration”, he would be flattered by Ba’s claim.

Savinho was brilliant in first Man City start against Chelsea

The 20-year-old looked right at home in a City shirt, as he showed no signs of nerves playing against a team of Chelsea’s stature.

Instead, Savinho did not hesitate to take on Marc Cucurella and run at players in general.

The youngster’s approach was direct and his silky technique meant it was very difficult for the Blues players to dispossess him.

In the final third, Savinho’s decision-making also showed that he plays above his years, as he picked the right moments to take on a man, keep things ticking or find a runner.

All in all, the former Girona winger can be very proud of his Premier League debut.
