Manchester City attacker Jack Grealish has admitted that he wished Erling Haaland could have played in his side’s 2-1 win against Luton Town.
In a post-match interview with Sky Sports (10/11/2023), Grealish explained how the Norwegian superstar was tailor-made to do serious damage against a team like the Hatters.
However, Pep Guardiola revealed after the contest that the £51 million (Metro) man had suffered a minor injury, adding that he could either be available for selection against Crystal Palace or during the Club World Cup.
Manchester City matchwinner Jack Grealish says he wished Erling Haaland could have started against Luton Town
Haaland’s absence was not felt as much as expected by the Sky Blues, who registered their first win in the Premier League since battering Bournemouth 6-1 in early November.
Goals from Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish cancelled out Elijah Adebayo’s opener for Rob Edwards’ side.
Reflecting on the clash, Jack Grealish feels Manchester City striker Erling Haaland could have wreaked havoc against Luton Town.

“This is one game where we would have been desperate for him”, Grealish told Sky Sports.
“When the other team goes man for man, Erling is brilliant. I don’t think there’s any team in the world who can handle him one-against-one. He’s so strong and he has pace.”
The treble-winners must learn to adapt without Erling Haaland
Jack Grealish is spot on and perhaps Manchester City would have beaten Luton Town more comfortably had Erling Haaland been on the pitch.
But over the years, City have shown how their system dictates their displays more than any individual player.
Be it without Vincent Kompany or Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester City have found ways to win games and league titles in the absence of some of their very best players, during the ‘Centurions’ and the 2018/2019 seasons respectively.
While Erling Haaland’s injury is likely not to keep him out of contention to start for too long, the treble-winners must ensure that they can manage to get results even during his time out of action.
Ultimately, that is also where Pep Guardiola’s genius comes into the picture.
