Manchester City have faced off against Real Madrid quite a few times in recent years.
Specifically, Pep Guardiola’s side have come up against the Spanish club eight times in the Champions League since the 2019/20 season.
Now though, one former player, who spent time playing in Madrid and Manchester but not for City or Real, has shared his verdict on one current player in Guardiola’s squad and how he compares to one of the Spanish club’s stars.

Diego Forlan picks Ilkay Gundogan over Aurelien Tchouameni
Appearing in a recent video shared on Goal’s official TikTok channel, Diego Forlan was involved in a challenge where he had to pick between certain players based on who he thinks is better.
When asked to pick between Aurelien Tchouameni and Ilkay Gundogan, the former striker picked the City star.
Gundogan is a special player
Back in 2016, Guardiola made Gundogan his first signing as City manager after the club bought him from Borussia Dortmund for £20m (via BBC Sport).
Having then gone on to make over 300 appearances for the Blues and captaining them to their historic treble, the German joined Barcelona as a free agent in 2023.
Spending just one season at the Spanish club, the 33-year-old returned to City on a free transfer last month.
Following this return, Martin Keown claimed that City made themselves even tougher to beat with Gundogan now back in the squad.
Since Real paid £84m (via The Guardian) to sign Tchouameni from Monaco back in 2022, the 24-year-old has made 93 appearances across all competitions, chipping in with three goals and five assists.
Despite the Frenchman being a top player for club and country, the fact that Forlan picked Gundogan over him shows just how much the former striker admires him as a player.
