Disastrous news for Manchester City ahead of Tottenham clash after official Premier League announcement

Tottenham Hotspur will play host to Manchester City in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

The Premier League clash against Tottenham will be a great chance for Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City players to bounce back quickly from Sunday’s home defeat to Liverpool.

The majority of Man City players absolutely stunk out the Etihad during the 2-0 loss to the Reds.

Guardiola has a serious task on his hands now, if the Man City boss is to lift his players ahead of the clash with Spurs.

It has been really tough going for City this season, and big change lies ahead at The Etihad, with up to eight players said to be set for summer exits.

However, in the here and now, Pep has to get a tune out of the players he has at his disposal, if he is to guide his side to a top four finish.

That will be a lot easier said than done, given the huge drop-off in form of many of his key players this season.

And things are set to get even harder for City, with a trip to Tottenham pencilled in for Wednesday night.

The Cityzens have won only once away at Spurs in the Premier League since 2018.

The latest news released by the Premier league means it could be a long and challenging night for the Man City players in north London on Wednesday.

Jarred Gillett to referee Tottenham vs Manchester City Premier League clash

Jarred Gillett has been named as the referee for the Spurs vs Man City clash, with Graham Scott heading up the VAR team, as confirmed by the Premier League’s official website.

Now, that could be a big issue for Man City. Gillett actually sent an apology to the City staff after his shocking performance during the 2-2 draw with Brentford in mid-January (The Athletic).

Gillett also awarded Newcastle a controversial penalty against City at St James’ Park earlier this season – one that even Alan Shearer admitted was harsh on the visitors (Shields Gazette).

It has previously been reported that Gillett is a Liverpool fan (Liverpool.com), and is banned from refereeing their games as a result.

So why should he be allowed to officiate games being played by their rivals? It’s just plain wrong isn’t it?

If he isn’t allowed to referee Liverpool matches, then he shouldn’t be given Manchester City and Arsenal games either.

In addition to that news, Graham Scott will be on VAR – remember him? He was the man who was on VAR duty for the Man City vs Tottenham clash at the Etihad in 2019.

He ruled out a late winner from Gabriel Jesus in really controversial fashion.

Scott also incurred the wrath of Pep Guardiola during Manchester City’s clash with Nottingham Forest at the City Ground in 2023.

The Spaniard was apoplectic with the 56-year-old’s performance (The Mirror).

Jarred Gillett’s Manchester City record

The one bit of really good news for City is that they actually have a decent record when Gillett is refereeing their games.

Man City have won six and drawn two of the eight games the 42-year-old has officiated.

The Australian has handed out 11 yellow cards to Man City players during those matches, and awarded them two penalties.

Gillett has a long and checkered past when it comes to controversial decisions, but not just when refereeing Man City games.

His has made numerous high-profile gaffs, including a major incident during Chelsea vs West Ham in 2022 and a plethora of infractions when refereeing Arsenal games (Express).

Manchester City fans won’t be happy one little bit that Jarred Gillett has been named as the referee for the huge Premier League clash with Tottenham.

And the fact that Graham Scott is on VAR for the game won’t help matters either.
