Erling Haaland broke Premier League record Wayne Rooney set in 2011 during Man City’s 2-1 win vs Brentford

It seems like Manchester City goalscorer Erling Haaland is on a mission to break every record this season.

Haaland continues to make a case for why he is arguably the best striker in world football as he netted a brace in City’s 2-1 win against Brentford.

Both of the Norwegian’s goals showcased the variety of finishes he has in his locker — initially scoring a weak-footed strike before going on to chip Mark Flekken from close range.

Jack Grealish singled Haaland out after his masterful performance as he spearheaded Manchester City’s victory against Brentford on Saturday.

The £375,000-a-week man looks like he is in the form of his life — despite having been one of the most devastating players in the world for several years.

But Pep Guardiola revealed Haaland is “sharper” this season and his revelation in August seems to be manifesting itself.

Haaland surpasses Rooney by breaking his 13-year-old record as Man City beat Brentford

In recent memory, the only striker to have started a Premier League campaign in such blockbuster fashion was Wayne Rooney during the 2011/2012 season.

The retired marksman scored eight goals for Manchester United in their first four league games; one against West Brom and Tottenham Hotspur apiece and successive hat-tricks against Arsenal and Bolton Wanderers.

The Englishman went on to score 27 league goals in that season.

Yet, Manchester City went on to pip Manchester United to the league title during that season on goal difference.

However, City’s star striker made history at the Etihad Stadium once again.

After his brace against Brentford, Haaland has scored nine goals so far this term; the most a player has scored after the first four games in a Premier League season — with Rooney initially setting the record in the 2011/2012 campaign with eight — as per Opta Joe.

How many Premier League goals Erling Haaland could score this season

So far, the 24-year-old has scored 2.25 goals per game.

However, it seems unlikely that Haaland will score goals at this rate throughout the campaign.

Even in the two-time Premier League winner’s debut campaign, he scored 36 goals in 35 appearances — scoring 1.02 goals per 90.

However, if Haaland continues to bag goals at the rate he has so far, he could end the season with around 83 goals to his name.

Even for a goalscorer of the Leeds-born phenomenon’s stature, such a figure might be virtually impossible to achieve.
