Manchester City goalkeeper Zack Steffen is to leave the club after four-and-a-half years and join Colorado Rapids.

Following a claim last month that Colorado Rapids were in advanced talks with City over the player, Steffen is to now depart and embark on a new chapter, having only made a handful of appearances at the Etihad Stadium since joining in 2019 from Columbus Crew.

He played 21 games for City, mostly in the cups, keeping eight clean sheets.

Last term, he went on loan to Middlesbrough, and previously he had a spell at Fortuna Dusseldorf.

The 28-year-old is now set to become the club’s first departure of the window…

According to The Athletic this evening, an agreement has been reached for Steffen to join MLS club Colorado Rapids.

Colorado are said to be undergoing an overhaul after a disappointing 2023 which saw them finish bottom of the Western Conference.

It will be a fresh start for Steffen, who underwent knee surgery in the summer which prevented him from going out on loan for the first half of the current season.

Apparently, the agreement is for three years, with Colorado having the option for a fourth. He will not take up a ‘designated player’ spot.

It is unclear at this stage if Colorado have paid a fee to City for the signing of Steffen.

Good luck, Zack

So Steffen is leaving City and he will go with the best wishes of the fans.

Steffen never really threatened to take Ederson’s number one spot at the Etihad Stadium, but had some decent outings during his time at the club.

Pep Guardiola did once call him ‘an exceptional goalkeeper’, but fans never really felt he was a huge threat to Ederson. Shaka Hislop actually said back in November 2023 that Steffen actually made a bit of a mistake signing for City in the first place.

It has to be said, he did not provide the Brazilian with as strong a push as Stefan Ortega Moreno is doing these days.

Ortega joined the club in the summer of 2022 and is genuinely a superb backup who would start for most clubs in the Premier League.
