Richard Keys has now commented on the appointment of Anthony Taylor ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash between Manchester City and Chelsea.
The 66-year-old took to X (previously known as Twitter) to share his thoughts.
So, what did Richard Keys say about Anthony Taylor and Manchester City? Let’s take a look…
What’s the story?
Well, the BeIN Sports pundit has every right to be confused.
Taylor was demoted to the Championship for last weekend’s round of fixtures, after incorrectly awarding Newcastle a penalty against Wolves in the recent 2-2 draw at Molineux.
The 45-year-old was punished for that by being asked to take charge of Preston’s clash with Coventry on Saturday in England’s second tier.
Taylor again made a bizarre penalty call, awarding Preston a soft spot kick which ultimately helped them secure a 3-2 win.
Rather than punish him again – however – the Premier League have now handed Taylor what is arguably the biggest fixture on the schedule this weekend as Manchester City travel to Stamford Bridge.
After hearing the news, Keys wrote: “Can someone explain this to me please? Anthony Taylor is relegated to the C’ship for a week – gives another shocking pen – this time against Cov at Preston – then is immediately promoted back to PL for City v Chelsea – a couple of miles from his home.”

Chelsea fans themselves were also bewildered by the news – having previously lodged a petition against Taylor, which received over 160,000 signatures.
Anthony Taylor appointment could make Sunday more hostile for Manchester City
As shown by the 160,000 signatures on the aforementioned petition, Chelsea fans strongly dislike Taylor – that pretty much goes without saying.
Therefore, the Stamford Bridge faithful will surely make their frustrations known throughout Sunday’s clash, which could cause a hostile atmosphere.

There is sure to be added spice around the fixture now, but as always, Manchester City need to rise above it and not allow themselves to be dragged into a different game by Chelsea, as Tottenham arguably were on Monday.
Hopefully, Taylor can oversee a free flowing and exciting clash on Sunday.
