Fabrizio Romano has provided a fresh transfer update about a certain Manchester City defender’s potential move to Borussia Dortmund.

Manchester City have made two sales this summer, with Sergio Gomez and Liam Delap signing for Real Sociedad and Ipswich Town respectively.

It seems like Pep Guardiola’s side could make their third sale of the transfer window.

When it comes to incomings, City have only signed Savinho but in the outgoings department, they seem to be far more active.

On Saturday, Fabrizio Romano reported that Yan Couto is set to sign for Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth €25 million (£21.1 million).

Fabrizio Romano shares what he knows about Yan Couto and Borussia Dortmund

It seems like despite having an impressive season out on loan at Girona, Couto, 22, did not manage to convince the decision-makers at the Etihad Stadium that he is ready to start for them.

Despite Kyle Walker turning 34 in May and Rico Lewis recently admitting he wishes to play in central midfield on a full-time basis one day, the Brazilian was seemingly not viewed as their long-term solution at right-back.

Dortmund, who are known to pounce at the chance of signing young talent naturally queued up for the exciting prospect’s signature.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed on X that Couto is “set to travel next week” to undergo medical tests at Borussia Dortmund if the deal is done by then.

Romano added that City and Dortmund still need to finalise the structure of the deal, payment terms and the final details before the transfer is completed.

Man City should reinvest Couto and other sale money into Rodri backup

If Manchester City get the deal with Borussia Dortmund over the line for Couto, they should utilise the fee from his potential sale as well as those of Gomez and Delap to sign a backup for Rodri.

City’s primary priority in the transfer window should be bringing in an understudy to take the burden off the Spaniard’s shoulders — especially after witnessing him pick up an injury in the Euro 2024 final.

The Sky Blues cannot afford to spend a significant chunk of next season without Rodri if he manages to get injured.

As a result, it would best if they reinvested the potential income they earn from sales towards signing an understudy to him, who could ideally even push him for a starting spot or play alongside him.
