Manchester City have had some rotten luck this season when it comes to injuries.

The Premier League champions’ performances have been way off their usual standards, but it’s hard to place the blame on the players.

Indeed, City have been decimated by injuries this season.

Rodri was ruled out for the season earlier this year against Arsenal, and since that point, City have had injury after injury, particularly in the defensive areas.

Jack Grealish shared a positive update this week after he picked up an injury against Real Madrid, but, unfortunately, there isn’t such good news on Manuel Akanji.

Indeed, Akanji also went off injured against Madrid this week, and he’s now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Manuel Akanji set for 10 weeks out

Pep Guardiola confirmed in his press conference that Manuel Akanji is set for a lengthy spell out as he needs surgery on his injury.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Akanji is set for 10 weeks out after this blow.

Akanji has been one of City’s more reliable players this season, as shown by his stats.

Akanji has started 20 games in the Premier League so far this term, but he’s now set to miss a large portion of the business-end of the season.

Manuel Akanji injury history

This is a very frustrating injury for City as Akanji has always been one of the most robust players in the team.

Indeed, since arriving at the Etihad back in 2022, Akanji has only ever missed eight games through injury.

Akanji has avoided injury for the most part at City, but, sadly, he has been here before with a lengthy lay-off.

Early in his career, Akanji suffered and ACL injury that ruled him out for almost a year, while he had problems, on and off, for Borussia Dortmund at times too.

Akanji has earned praise this season, particularly for his performances in training, but, unfortunately, City will now be without the Swiss defender.

Luckily, Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov arrived in the January transfer window, so City do still have some element of defensive depth, but this situation is far from ideal, especially with two big games against Newcastle and Real Madrid on the horizon.
