Manchester City are reportedly closing in on the signing of Claudio Echeverri from River Plate in a deal that could look a bit like the Julian Alvarez one.

It was reported last night that City were readying a £22 million bid for the Argentine midfielder.

Apparently, City have felt quite hopeful and optimistic about landing the highly rated and highly coveted youngster, who also has interest from Chelsea and Barcelona.

It looks as though there have now been some developments, with journalist Fabrizio Romano dropping a significant update this afternoon…

Romano has provided an exciting update about Manchester City’s pursuit of Claudio Echeverri.

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, he said: “Understand Manchester City are advancing to final stages of Claudio Echeverri deal, contacts taking place even today.

“Plan to structure deal together with River Plate same as for Julián Álvarez – Echeverri will stay on loan. Package in excess of €20m. More to follow.”

City found major success with Julian Alvarez, who has been one of City’s top performers so far this season.

He joined the club in the summer of 2022, with City actually agreeing a deal in advance but keeping the player at River Plate initially.

That turned out to be a sensible move, because Alvarez came in and made a really solid impact for City and did not take very long to settle.

Echeverri could be another gem

This is quite an exciting development and it does seem that City are poised to land another top young Argentine talent.

The club have obviously had a number of top players from Argentina at the Etihad Stadium over the years, with Alvarez being the latest.

Clearly, there is a feeling that Echeverri could well be another great addition, and City appear to feel that the structure of the Alvarez deal can pay off in a similar way.

Forbes believe Echeverri could also be the next superstar to leave River’s talent factory, and there have also been early comparisons to Lionel Messi which is all very exciting.

We shall see what transpires, but this is definitely a situation for fans to keep an eye on.
