Manchester City’s neighbours and fierce rivals Manchester United have announced plans to build a new stadium.

Manchester United plan to spend £2billion building a new 100,000-seater stadium, leaving behind Old Trafford after more than 110 years.

The Red Devils’ co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has revealed the ambitious plans as part of a wider regeneration project which will create ‘jobs and investment’ during the build phase and long beyond.

Needless to say, the news has sparked quite a reaction from Man City fans on the social media.

As things stand, Pep Guardiola’s side sit in 5th place of the Premier League table after a 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest last time out; 13 points ahead of Ruben Amorim’s United down in 14th.

“Most expensive circus tent in history!” said one City fan on social media, adding: “£2 billion for this.”

And the ‘circus’ theme was one shared by many Man City fans. Another comment read: “It looks like a circus. It fits them perfectly,” and another: “It will definitely be a great circus with a bunch of clowns.”

Other humorous comments read: “To be fair this will definitely be the best ground in the Championship,” as another City supporter wrote: “Haaland and Foden’s new playground looks alright.”

“Trying to be City again,” said one fan, as another simply wrote: “I can’t believe this is about to happen.”

The biggest football stadiums in Europe right now

Man City’s Etihad Stadium houses 62,000 fans making it the 29th largest football stadium in European football. Old Trafford is currently the 10th biggest with a capacity of 74,000.

But United’s new stadium, if it does eventually get built, will become the joint-biggest stadium in Europe alongside Barcelona’s Nou Camp which, when finally renovated, will also house 100,000.

Wembley is the biggest stadium in England right now with a capacity of 90,000.
