“For that reason”: Danny Murphy tips Pep Guardiola to start £50,000-a-week Manchester City player vs Liverpool

Danny Murphy has now tipped Pep Guardiola to start Jeremy Doku in Saturday’s Premier League clash between Manchester City and Liverpool.

The man from Chester made the comment when writing for the Daily Mail.

So, why does Danny Murphy expect Jeremy Doku to start for Manchester City against Liverpool? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the 46-year-old believes the Belgium international could enjoy a productive afternoon up against Joel Matip or Ibrahima Konate, with Trent Alexander-Arnold expected to slot into a central role once again.

Murphy wrote: “Trent Alexander-Arnold has won plaudits for his hybrid role but if he pushes on next Saturday, that is a worry for Joel Matip or even Ibrahima Konate to cover. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jeremy Doku gets the nod on the left for that reason — the extra gear of pace.”

In our view, we think Guardiola would be a fool not to deploy his £50,000-a-week speedster, who has been compared to Riyad Mahrez, against Liverpool, given the way Jürgen Klopp sets his side up.

Not only does Alexander-Arnold now operate in the middle, but Mohamed Salah is also highly unlikely to be spending his Saturday afternoon tracking back, so Doku could have the freedom of the Etihad Stadium if he starts on the left wing.

The Belgian’s pace would stretch the Reds immensely, freeing up space for the likes of Julian Alvarez, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva to cause havoc themselves.

Jack Grealish is Guardiola’s other option for that role on the left, although the England international does not possess raw pace like Doku, so the likes of Matip or Konate could find it easier to deal with him.

Hopefully, the 21-year-old gets the nod on Saturday. If he starts, it could be the difference between victory and defeat for the treble winners.
