Nedum Onuoha has suggested Nathan Ake is currently one of the most intelligent players at Manchester City, choosing him as his ultimate thinker in a new feature video.

Onuoha was speaking about Ake in a video for the club’s website, where he had to make up his ultimate Manchester City footballer.

Ake is now a very popular player at City. After signing for the club from Bournemouth for around £41 million, there were some raised eyebrows.

And it wasn’t the best of first seasons for Ake at City, having to sit on the bench most of the time.

But over the last couple of years, the Netherlands international has been superb for City after finding a bit more prominence. Last season especially, he was utterly fantastic as the club finished the season by winning the Treble.

Ake is a brilliant player – and Onuoha has now suggested he is actually really intelligent individual…

Onuoha was asked to choose players from the side he played in, and the current side, to make up his ‘ultimate Manchester City player’.

He was first asked for who he thought was the best ‘thinker’.

From the team he played in, he selected Gelson Fernandes. And from the current side, he plumped for Ake.

On the 28-year-old, he said: “Well I don’t know that many of them personally. But from what I’ve heard, and the way they talk, especially when they’re on camera, I think I’m going to go for Nathan Ake.

“I think the way he carries himself. You can see he is more of a thinker.”

This comes after Mateo Kovacic chose Ake as one of three City players he’d want to join him on a desert island.

Ake is a very smart player and individual

Ake certainly comes across as a very smart person and player. He always speaks very well in interviews, and you can also get a sense of his intelligence just watching him play.

Last season especially, he was just so good tactically playing on that left side.

He barely put a foot wrong in City’s Treble-winning season, and it was brilliant to see him feature so much, having had a fairly quiet start to his City career.

There are plenty of intelligent players and thinkers at City but Ake has to be up there as one of the smartest.

Even Pep Guardiola himself remarked back in 2021 that Ake was ‘an intelligent guy’.
