Gary Lineker shares whether Pep Guardiola would actually take the England job

Pep Guardiola is currently preparing to take on his ninth season in charge of Manchester City.

After seeing his side become the first team to win four consecutive Premier League trophies at the end of their previous season, the City manager went on to see 14 figures from his squad take part in the 2024 European Championship.

With Spain beating England in the final, it was then announced yesterday that Gareth Southgate had resigned from his position as the Three Lions manager.

As a result of that news, the prospect of potentially seeing Guardiola replace Southgate has come up in the media, with one pundit and former England star now sharing his verdict on the matter.

Gary Lineker discusses whether Pep Guardiola could become the next England manager

While discussing the possibility of Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp replacing Gareth Southgate and becoming the next England manager, Gary Lineker had this to say on the matter during a recent edition of The Rest Is Football.

He said: “I’ve always thought it should be an English manager if possible but if you said to me Jurgen Klopp would do it or Pep Guardiola would do it, which I suspect they wouldn’t, then that’s a little bit different.

“You’d go ‘cor’ because they are absolutely proven and elite. Jurgen Klopp is not working at the moment, he wants to take time out anywhere, it might not be the right timing for him, I think he has turned down one or two jobs already.

“If either of those were available you’d go wow. But I think it might come down to the English boys.”

Guardiola still has a contract at City

As things stand, the 53-year-old is set to enter the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium.

During his time in charge of the Blues, the Spaniard has overlooked 472 games in total, winning 349, drawing 57 and losing 66.

Having won many trophies with City, it’s easy to see why Guardiola has been mentioned with the England job.

However, back in 2017, when asked if taking the England job could be an option for him at any point in the future, Guardiola said no because he felt the manager for a national side should be from that country.

Therefore, we feel that, similarly to Lineker, the City boss wouldn’t be the one to replace Southgate if the FA approached him in the near future.
