Gary Neville says £51m player was an ‘unusual’ signing when he arrived at Man City

Manchester City have signed multiple players during Pep Guardiola’s reign in charge of the club.

The Manchester club have shown over the past eight years that they are willing to spend a variety of different sums of money to bring new players to the Etihad Stadium.

Now that the Blues have officially kicked off their 2024/25 Premier League season, a pundit has shared his thoughts on one of City’s most significant transfer deals and how he felt about it at the time it happened.

Gary Neville still stunned by Erling Haaland’s transfer to Man City

After scoring City’s first goal in their 2-0 win over Chelsea, Erling Haaland told Sky Sports afterwards that he was thinking about a save Robert Sanchez made against him last season and how that led to him being able to score this time around.

This then led to Gary Neville having this to say about the striker and this revelation in the latest Monday Night Football.

He said: “I think to be fair we are ignorant to think that he wasn’t thinking about the game in this level of detail.

“It was brilliant, mesmerising to hear about that yesterday, thinking about the season before. Why are we surprised? That’s why Man City are where they are.

“When he came to Man City two years ago and the Premier League got him it was an unusual signing for the Premier League.

“These type of players ordinarily go to Barcelona or Real Madrid. It is a blessing, he is a beast of a player.”

Haaland has been a star signing for City

After seeing Haaland score 86 goals in 89 games for Borussia Dortmund, City paid £51m to sign him back in 2022.

Since then, the 24-year-old, who Ruben Dias recently said has an unreal mindset, has now bagged 91 goals in 100 appearances across all competitions.

This highlights how much of a star signing he’s been for the Manchester club, in addition to what Neville spoke about in terms of how much detail Haaland takes on board about his opponents like he revealed he did with Sanchez at the weekend.
