As England beat Spain in the U-21 Euros final, courtesy of a 1-0 victory, Sergio Gomez criticised Cole Palmer after the contest.
The versatile left-back was surprised by his Manchester City teammate’s behaviour, whose celebrations alongside the Young Lions’ after Curtis Jones’ opener and James Trafford’s last-gasp penalty save led to a brawn between both teams.
Despite Sergio Gomez sharing a dressing room with Cole Palmer at Manchester City, he called out his fellow treble-winner, as relayed by the Metro.
Sergio Gomez slates Cole Palmer after England beat Spain in U-21 Euros final
Branded as ‘special’ by Pep Guardiola, the Englishman’s deflected free-kick on to Curtis Jones proved to be the decisive goal in the final on Saturday.
While Spain could have equalised right at the death from 12 yards out, James Trafford kept Abel Ruiz out, and subsequently made another huge save to push his nation over the line.
However, Sergio Gomez was left unimpressed by Cole Palmer, for the manner in which he celebrated alongside his teammates during the two biggest moments of the contest.

“It surprised me. He didn’t want to apologise or anything like some of his other teammates”, the Spaniard said.
Sergio Gomez not only criticised England but also fired shots at the English for their lack of sportsmanship, according to him, saying, “I don’t know, I would have celebrated it in a different way and my teammates would have done it in a different way as well. They [England] have the attitude they want to have. This is not the first time something like this has happened with this team. They wanted to celebrate it like this and also after the missed penalty.”
Sergio Gomez and his Manchester City teammate will reconcile upon returning to club action
At the end of the day, the disagreement between Sergio Gomez and Cole Palmer is part and parcel of football.
In such high-stakes affairs usually, emotions are running high, which explains the reactions of the Manchester City pair, during and after the game.
The Sky Blues duo will likely put their differences aside upon returning to the Etihad Stadium and learn from a key lesson in their relatively short careers.
If anything, both of these wonderkid have exhibited signs that they are always in it to win it, which reflects their elite mentalities at such a young age.
