Manchester City are set to have a big change at the club behind the scenes in 2025.
More precisely, Txiki Begiristain is set to leave City at the end of the season, bringing an end to what will be 13 years as the club’s sporting director.
It was then reported that City have agreed a deal to see Hugo Viana replace Begiristain, leaving his role as Sporting CP’s director of football to do so.
Now though, someone who knows what it’s like to work in Manchester and has a connection to Sporting has shared his thoughts on another figure currently at the Portuguese club who has also been mentioned with a role at City recently.
- Is Pep Guardiola leaving Man City? Possible replacements, contract and all you need to know

Bruno Fernandes hails Ruben Amorim amid Man City manager links
A recent report from Record claimed that Viana could look to replace Pep Guardiola with Ruben Amorim if the 53-year-old leaves City when his current contract expires in June.
This has led to Manchester United star and former Sporting player, Bruno Fernandes saying this about Amorim to CNN Portugal.
He said: “Since Mr Amorim arrived at Sporting, it has been one of the teams to practise better football.
“They have been consistent, the signings have been right and they are in a very good moment. It’s a very well-prepared team.
“In relation to Amorim, it shows that at this moment he is prepared. Coaching Sporting and winning championships is not easy, Sporting went 20 years without winning championships and Amorim arrived and has already won two.
“This shows that the work has been done well If he could manage to do the same in England, Spain or anywhere else, you will never know until you get there, but I am sure his qualities are there for everyone to see.”
Amorim is a big fan of Guardiola
Back in April, when the Sporting coach was linked with replacing David Moyes at West Ham United, Guillem Balague said this about how much Amorim admires Guardiola.
He said: “It is not a surprise he is a big fan of the Premier League given the pace of the game and the managers involved – in particular the work being done by Pep Guardiola and Roberto de Zerbi.
“He follows Manchester City and Brighton closely and makes sure he watches a couple of Premier League games every week.”
Since taking charge of Sporting back in March 2020, the 39-year-old has overlooked 224 games in total.
Across those games, the Portuguese side have won 158, drawn 33 and lost 33, lifting five trophies in the process.
This makes it easy to see why Fernandes has been sharing his praise for Amorim.
Despite that, everyone at City will undoubtedly be hoping to see Guardiola sign a contract extension at the Etihad Stadium given the significant number of trophies he’s guided the club to during his reign.
