Ian Wright has lauded Manchester City defender John Stones for his marvellous performance in his side’s 1-0 win against AFC Bournemouth.
Pep Guardiola admitted that despite the 29-year-old’s exploits against the Cherries, he is still not fully fit.
Yet, John Stones was in splendid touch, as he put in perhaps his best performance of an injury-riddled 2023/2024 season for him.
Ian Wright hails “amazing” John Stones after “masterclass” as Manchester City beat Bournemouth
The Englishman was tasked by Pep Guardiola to adapt his role in the game against Andoni Iraola’s side.
While the £250,000-a-week (Sport Rac) man played his usual hybrid role when City had possession, off the ball, he was deployed as a left-sided centre-back.
That too, despite Ruben Dias starting proceedings, who usually plays on the left with the Englishman playing on the right side of defence, regardless of who he partners for club or country.
However, John Stones was in terrific touch for Manchester City as they battled right until the end to defeat Bournemouth, which led Ian Wright to heap praise on his display.

“I watched a centre-half yesterday in John Stones put on a masterclass. He ran the game, he was everywhere on the pitch. He was amazing”, he said on the Wrighty’s House podcast.
Don Hutchison hailed the former Everton centre-back’s showing as “sensational” while complimenting his ability to play anywhere on the pitch.
John Stones should start against Luton Town in the FA Cup
Any and everyone who tuned in to watch Manchester City beat Bournemouth would agree with Ian Wright, who rightly raved about John Stones’ performance on Saturday.
As City prepare to face Luton Town in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup on Tuesday, it may be worth starting Stones to ensure he gets up to speed in terms of his fitness.
With the Sky Blues set to face the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Brighton & Hove Albion and Aston Villa in March, it is imperative for the decorated defender to become as fit as possible.
While the upcoming clash against Luton may not be viewed as a majorly important game for City, considering their priorities in the Premier League and the Champions League, it may prove to be crucial if it helps John Stones feel fitter than he currently is.
