Gary Lineker lavished praise upon Manchester City attacker Phil Foden for his excellent performance in his side’s 4-4 draw against Chelsea on Sunday.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the popular pundit gave his two cents on the 23-year-old’s showing against Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Gary Lineker raves about “excellent” Phil Foden after Manchester City drew 4-4 against Chelsea

Described as “unreal” by Rio Ferdinand, the Englishman was arguably the visitors’ best player at Stamford Bridge alongside Erling Haaland.

Especially in the first half, it seemed like City were at their threatening best from the right flank, where he was causing Marc Cucurella plenty of problems.

After Manchester City and Chelsea played out an instant classic of a contest, Gary Lineker reserved special praise for Phil Foden.

“He was excellent today. He was really good”, Lineker said on The Rest Is Football podcast after the clash.

Phil Foden shines wherever he plays

Gary Lineker is spot on about Phil Foden, who showed once again why he has had a stellar season for Manchester City in his side’s pulsating draw against Chelsea.

After Kevin De Bruyne was sidelined with a long-term injury at the start of the campaign, it seemed like the Stockport-born technician would replace him in the middle of the park.

However, Foden has been shifted around primarily between two roles this campaign and even so, he has not let this lack of positional stability affect his displays whatsoever.

The first position is on the right wing, where the decorated midfielder started against Chelsea.

Phil Foden brought the perfect balance of dynamism and composure to the table.

The treble-winner’s game is continuing to mature, as he showed against the Blues that he has a brilliant understanding of when to be direct and when to either retain possession or find a runner.

The other position Phil Foden has played is in the half-spaces on the right-hand side, which he is allowed to do due to Kyle Walker holding the width when City are in possession.

Even in that role, Foden has been sensational as his tactical malleability continues to stand out.
