Dave Edwards has described Phil Foden as ‘a special, special talent’, and believes the handling of the player in his career so far has been spot on.

Foden continued his fine form at the weekend, scoring a brace against Manchester United to turn the game on its head.

His contributions helped City win 3-1 and get back to just one point behind Liverpool.

Foden has gone to a new level this season for City, and he has undoubtedly benefited from key players like Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland having spells out through injury.

Dave Edwards believes that with Foden, we are now seeing the culmination of what has been perfect management…

Last night, Edwards appeared on Sky Sports News to provide commentary for City’s Champions League clash with FC Copenhagen.

City won 3-1, but Foden did not play following his exploits against United.

The 23-year-old should be raring to go at the weekend having had a rest, and he stands to be a key player.

He stands to be a key player in every game he plays now, and Foden reaching the level he has is all thanks to great management by Pep Guardiola and his staff according to Edwards.

He said: “He’s a special, special talent. I think Pep deserves a lot of credit. So many people when Foden was young, said he should go out on loan and get more football. But he stayed, he bided his time and learned a lot from the likes of De Bruyne.

“Now he’s getting to a point where he can really go and influence games with numbers, whether it’s assists or goals.

“Whatever that final action is, he’s now delivering more consistently.”

Pep got it spot on with Foden

The calls for Foden to go out on loan when he was a teenager were pretty loud.

But in Pep’s mind it was never an option, and it was just about the player showing patience and trusting the process.

Given Foden’s work ethic and love for football, he was always going to become a success at City if he stayed, rather than go out on loan.

The natural ability has always been there, and then he has the mentality to boot. Pep knew this, kept him around and now a world-class player has been born.
