Manchester City Rodri has had his fair share of ups and downs in recent months.
After seeing City get knocked out of the Champions League on penalties by Real Madrid in the quarter-final stage last season, Rodri then helped his side become the first side to win four consecutive Premier League trophies.
Following that, the midfielder then played a vital role in Spain winning the 2024 European Championship.
Having then suffered a season-ending knee injury in just his second Premier League appearance of the 2024/25 campaign, Rodri was recently named the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner.
Following that big announcement, some behind-the-scenes details have emerged regarding how the Manchester club feel about the Spaniard’s future with his current contract at the Etihad Stadium set to expire in 2027.

Man City get confidence boost for Rodri contract extension
According to a recent report from Give Me Sport, City’s confidence in seeing Rodri sign a contract extension has increased after seeing the midfielder win the Ballon d’Or.
More specifically, City feel Real Madrid’s decision to not attend the recent awards ceremony in Paris will pour cold water on Rodri potentially being tempted with a move to the Spanish club in the future.
The report also adds that the Manchester club are “looking to use Rodri’s extended period on the treatment table to their advantage as it gives them more time to hold negotiations” over a potential contract extension.
What has Rodri said about his future?
Back in July, Rodri opened up about his City future and the possibility of him returning to Spain at some point, saying this on the matter.
He said: “I try to analyse all the decisions I make, to have a criterion. And, above all, to go through the processes.
“I am very, very happy in England. I think I am in one of the best clubs in the world, that is obvious, and I am happy. I have a three-year contract and, when the time comes, I will see.
“But I have said it before with regard to the short term. I do not like or it does not make much sense to look at the long term.
“Spain is my country, Madrid is my city, at home. And well, when I went to Manchester, I remember a conversation I had with my parents in which they asked me if I was sure because I was going to another country, another culture. And, in the end, one is happy when one is sure of things.
“If I return, it would be with conviction.”
Following that, it was reported in August that City are aiming to get Rodri to sign a lucrative new deal and pledge his future to the club amid transfer links to Real.
Even though Pep Guardiola dismissed any ill-will towards Real for not going to the Ballon d’Or ceremony, it would make sense for City to feel that this may push Rodri towards signing a new deal rather than join a club that didn’t deem it necessary to congratulate the midfielder.
