Rodri is arguably the best defensive midfielder in the world, and Manchester City are plotting to reward him for his brilliance over the past few years.
Rodri will not be featuring for City today in the Premier League opener against Chelsea.
The midfielder returned late to the squad after being given an extended break by Pep Guardiola after winning the Euros with Spain.
Unlike, John Stones, Kyle Walker and Phil Foden, Rodri did not train this week and will therefore miss out today against the Blues at Stamford Bridge.
That will mean that Mateo Kovacic is likely to play in midfield, with either Nico O’Reilly, Bernardo Silva or Rico Lewis inverting. He could also operate as a single pivot.
Rodri will be back soon though, and the club are apparently now looking to get him tied down to a better contract.
Man City set to double Rodri’s wages as club eye new contract for midfielder

It has been reported by the Mirror that City are now looking to get Rodri signed up to a new contract that more reflects his status as the most influential player in the team.
The club are said to have now made this their top priority, as it is mentioned that Real Madrid are big fans of the star.
City wank to hike his wages to around £375,000 per week, which would bring him into the same league as the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland, who are the two top earners at the Etihad.
This would see Rodri approximately double his current wages.
City know how brilliant Rodri has been over the past few years and they are determined to get him tied down for his peak years, knowing Real Madrid like him.
Rodri currently has three years left on his existing deal, so there is no reason for anyone to be panicking at the moment.
But certainly, this is something City are hoping to get sorted quite soon.

Rodri still has quite a while left on his current contract, but it is easy to understand why the club want to hand him a new deal now.
Rodri, who was branded ‘world-class’ by Paul Merson earlier this summer, has now come into his prime years and the club are very aware of everything he has achieved in recent years and how influential he is in the team.
He is the best in the world in his position, and he needs a contract to reflect that. He absolutely should be on parity with the likes of De Bruyne and Haaland as a top earner at the club.
It would be a huge boost for City and everyone associated with the club if there was official news of him signing a new deal and hopefully that is something we get very soon.
It has previously been suggested that City see Rodri as a potential future captain and he does seem very happy at the club, so surely there’s a great chance he’ll extend.
