How Manchester City currently feel about re-signing Liam Delap after 2024 summer exit

Manchester City have cashed in on a significant number of players during previous transfer windows.

For example, names such as Julian Alvarez, Joao Cancelo, Riyad Mahrez, Cole Palmer, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus, among others, have left City on permanent deals to start new chapters elsewhere.

One player who left the Etihad Stadium during the previous summer window is Liam Delap.

Having worked his way through City’s academy and making six senior appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side, the striker joined Ipswich Town in a deal worth a reported fee of £20m (via BBC Sport).

Now though, just a few months after his move to Kieran McKenna’s side, some behind-the-scenes information has come to light regarding whether City could welcome Delap back to the Manchester club in January.

Man City’s stance on re-signing Liam Delap

According to a recent report from Give Me Sport, City are not planning to trigger the £30m buy-back clause they inserted into Delap’s deal with Ipswich for the upcoming January transfer window.

The report also adds that City’s stance will be music to the ears of Chelsea who are apparently interested in Delap, although Ipswich are eager to keep hold of the Englishman.

Micah Richards left ‘surprised’ by Delap’s City exit

Since joining Ipswich, Delap has featured in all 12 of the club’s Premier League games, bagging six goals in the process.

Earlier this month, Micah Richards discussed Delap’s City exit, saying this about the striker and his move to Ipswich

He said: “He’s got a bit of everything. I think obviously it helps that his dad was a professional footballer as well just to guide him.

“But when he left City, I was quite surprised really because throughout the youth, he was always someone who was highly sought after.”

Interestingly, it was recently reported that City will aim to sign a striker in January after Alvarez’s summer move to Atletico Madrid left Erling Haaland as the only centre-forward in the City squad.

Now that it has been claimed that Delap will not likely be making a return to Manchester in January, the club could be looking at other names instead.
