The previous summer transfer window saw a handful of significant deals materialise at Manchester City.
Specifically, in addition to sealing a £33m deal to bring Savinho to the Etihad Stadium, the Blues also saw Ilkay Gundogan return to the club on a free transfer as their two main incoming signings of the summer.
On the flip side, City cashed in on players from their senior squad and youth academy such as Julian Alvarez, Joao Cancelo, Sergio Gomez and Liam Delap.
Since the start of the season, Pep Guardiola’s side have only lost three matches across all competitions.
Unfortunately for them, those three defeats have come in their three previous games, making it the first time they’ve lost three in a row since 2018.
Looking ahead to the upcoming January transfer window, some behind-the-scenes information has come to light regarding what the Citizens are planning to do during the winter transfer period.

Man City aiming to sign Julian Alvarez replacement in January
According to a recent report from Give Me Sport, City will aim to bring in a replacement for Alvarez during the upcoming January transfer window.
The report specified that there is a “growing possibility” of City bringing in a new attacker in January “even though they turned down the opportunity to make a similar addition to their squad when they were inundated with proposals from agents after Alvarez sealed his exit.”
In addition to that, it was claimed that the Blues won’t look to bring in a guaranteed starter, but rather someone who can add some depth to their attack and fill in for Erling Haaland.
Who have City been linked with to replace Alvarez?
After Alvarez secured his £81m (via BBC Sport) move to Atletico Madrid in August, City were linked with Kyogo Furuhashi and Orri Oskarsson, although a move for either player didn’t materialise.
If these two players end up attracting interest from City again in January, let’s take a look at how the duo have fared for their current teams so far this season.
| 2024/25 | Appearances | Goals | Assists | Minutes Played |
| Kyogo Furuhashi | 15 | 6 | 3 | 991 |
| Orri Oskarsson | 22 | 9 | 1 | 1289 |
With this report suggesting City want to bring in a striker in January, this implies that they may now see their decision to not sign a replacement for Alvarez in the summer as a mistake.
Having also lost Rodri to a season-ending injury, it’ll be interesting to see if the Manchester club look to bring in a midfielder to replace the Spaniard in January as well as a possible new striker.
