Manchester City fans don’t want to accept it, but we are coming to the end of the Pep Guardiola era at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola’s contract at the club expires at the end of the season and as things stand, he will leave in the summer of 2025.

But reports have suggested that Guardiola could yet extend by one year at City, to take his tenure to 10 years.

The club are hopeful that the Spaniard will stick around for at least one more season, but we will see what transpires.

In any case, City will undoubtedly be planning for life after Guardiola. And one man who has been mentioned as a possible successor is Ruben Amorim.

And now, there is word of how Amorim feels about potentially becoming the next Manchester City manager.

It has been reported by iNews that Ruben Amorim would be ‘100 percent interested’ in the role of first-team manager should Guardiola leave.

News of the apparent interest in Amorim has come as no real surprise to Man City fans, with Hugo Viana recently being announced as the next director of football.

Viana is replacing Txiki Begiristain next summer, with the Spaniard stepping down to take a sabbatical.

Viana currently works with Amorim and the pair have enjoyed great success together at Sporting CP over the last few years.

Even if Guardiola does agree to extend his contract by a further year, it is very possible that Amorim will ultimately be strongly considered given his link to Viana.

Interestingly, Amorim’s contract at Sporting expires in the summer of 2026, so that would potentially tie in well with Guardiola extending his current deal by a year.

It is stated that there is ‘an increasingly end-of-cycle feel’ about Amorim at Sporting.

Amorim could be a great appointment

There is going to be so much speculation in the coming days and weeks and potentially months regarding City, Guardiola and who could be the next man in charge.

In an ideal world, Guardiola will agree to do one more season to take his tenure up to 10 years, and the club will make an early decision on who will replace him.

Ruben Amorim at Sporting CP
Games managed – 234
Wins – 167
Draws – 34
Losses – 33
Goals scored – 507
Goals conceded – 193
Win rate – 71.37%

It would be great to see him join Viana at the Etihad Stadium. They have worked brilliantly together at Sporting and it is so important these days for a manager and his sporting director to be on the same page.

Guardiola would not have had the success he’s had without Begiristain, and the club will surely want to replicate that double act as best they can.

Amorim could be a great choice. He’s got a 71% win rate at Sporting and is a two-time league champion, and has also managed in the Champions League.
