A new-look Champions League gets underway on Tuesday and Manchester City will kick things off at home to Inter the following day.

The Champions League will embark on a brand new format in the 2024/25 season, with the traditional group stage scrapped in favour of a ‘league phase.’

All 36 teams – up from 32 – will compete in the same league but will only face eight different opponents once, rather than every side home and away.

Every club will pay two sides from each of the four pots and Manchester City have been given an incredibly tough start to the competition by facing Inter at home.

In a rematch of the 2023 final, the two heavyweights will collide in an early meeting between two Pot 1 teams.

Pep Guardiola’s side are on a roll having won all four of their Premier League matches so far and will be hoping to continue that perfect start when they welcome the Serie A champions to the Etihad.

Manchester City vs Brentford team news

City will be sweating over the fitness of Savinho after the winger left the pitch late on in the win over Brentford clutching his hamstring. Thankfully, he trained on Tuesday ahead of the game.

The latest potential injury blow comes after Nathan Ake was ruled out until mid-October after suffering an injury while on international duty while Oscar Bobb remains sidelined.

In better news, Rodri could come in for his first start of the season after making his maiden appearance by playing the second half on Saturday.

Inter, meanwhile, could be without Marko Arunautovic, Federico Dimarco and Tajon Buchanan.

Prediction

Inter have had a sluggish start to the new season, with two fine victories sandwiched between two disappointing draws.

Simone Inzaghi’s side were held 2-2 by Genoa on the opening day, went on to handily defeat Lecce and Atalanta, but then drew 1-1 with lowly Monza on Sunday.

Still, they remain undefeated, like City, and are an extremely tricky test for the Blues in the opening European fixture.

This one could wind up a finely poised draw.

Prediction: City 1-1 Inter.
