You won’t find too many Manchester City fans shedding tears about Tuesday night’s defeat to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup on an evening when the bigger picture very much came into focus.

Pep Guardiola’s side fell behind early at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, trailing 2-0 before Matheus Nunes’ pulled one back in first-half stoppage time.

City pushed for a winner after the break, but Guardiola’s decision to leave Erling Haaland sat on the bench all evening spoke volumes about the manager’s priorities regarding the competition.

Instead, Guardiola turned to youth as the second half went on, with Jahmai Simpson-Pusey and Jacob Wright his final two replacements, while another academy graduate Nico O’Reilly also played the full 90 minutes.

Wright, who made his Man City debut back in January, was introduced on 63 minutes, replacing Savinho after the Brazilian was stretchered off the pitch with an ankle injury.

Injuries are decimating the City squad with eight players currently in the treatment room and others feeling the strain and while Guardiola’s squad is stretched to this degree, it opens the door to young players to stake a claim.

Wright brought some much-needed energy, drive and aggression to this City team and quickly showed that the occasion was not too big for him.

This confidence was on display just five minutes after he came on when he went close to an equaliser, receiving the ball in the D and quickly getting a snap shot away that flashed just wide of the Tottenham goal.

Guardiola name-checked the 19-year-old after the game, saying his performance was ‘really good’. Wright chalked up three shots, a total bettered only by Timo Werner on the night and produced one cross that was tailor-made for Haaland to nod in, had the Norwegian been risked.

City fans also noticed his eye-catching cameo at a time when Guardiola is struggling to get enough senior players to fill his matchday squad.

“That Jacob Wright peformance moved me,” posted one fan on X. “Can’t wait to see him get consistent senior minutes”

Another said: “Jacob Wright, he’s one for the future. Missed a couple of chances (glad he did) but atleast we could see what he has. Amazing academy talent all over the pitch.”

There were also calls to include him in City’s upcoming Premier League games: “I’d play Jacob Wright on Saturday and vs Brighton… 3 games to go before the next break, getting ever closer to January..”

With Guardiola facing one of the worst injury situations in years, he will need to call on fringe players and the door is opening for someone like Wright to lay down a marker.
