Benni McCarthy has said that Erling Haaland could take over from the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to become the best player in the world.
The Manchester United first-team coach was on South African radio station 97 Joburg, as he was discussing the £51.2 million (Sky Sports) man.
With Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo now past their primes, Benni McCarthy has backed Erling Haaland to take the baton and run with it.
Benni McCarthy says Erling Haaland could take over from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo
According to Wayne Rooney, the Norwegian striker is already the ‘best footballer in the world’ and deserves to win the Ballon d’Or.
The 22-year-old is the top scorer in European football, having bagged 52 goals in all competitions and has led Manchester City to a double, and could even win the treble in his debut season at the club.
However, Benni McCarthy believes that just like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Erling Haaland could sustain his dominance at the top for years to come.

“There is a lot of improvement that he can make to his game but overall, I think he’s one of the best players that they have and is now taking over from [Cristiano] Ronaldo and [Lionel] Messi.”
Erling Haaland is destined for greatness
Benni McCarthy is certainly correct as the highly-acclaimed goalscorer, alongside Kylian Mbappe looks set to reign over the sport, much like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for ages.
The youngster clearly has the potential to become an undisputed all-time great and what is even more impressive is how he continues to surpass expectations.
A glimpse at Haaland’s goalscoring rate wherever he has played is an insight into the fact that he is already operating at a level several legendary forwards have in their entire careers.
With time on Erling Haaland’s hands and Pep Guardiola to coach him along the way, his ceiling is limitless.
