Ilkay Gundogan is reported to have felt ‘disrespected’ by the contract offer Manchester City presented to him.

The Germany international is now heading to Barcelona

Yesterday, Fabrizio Romano reported earlier in the day that Gundogan was on the verge of completing a move to Barca. He then applied his famous catchphrase ‘Here we go’ to the story in the evening, indicating it is now as good as done.

The player has been linked with a move to the Camp Nou for weeks now. And it is now only a matter of time before the move is officially announced.

Apparently, Xavi had been in regular contact with Gundogan over the past weeks. He is said to have promised the player that he will have a leading role at the club.

Gundogan supposedly told his inner circle at the title celebrations that he wanted the move to Barca.

Reportedly, Gundogan is signing a two-year contract with Barca, with the option for another year after that.

According to journalist Helena Condis (via COPE), City have lost Gundogan due to the contract offer they made to him.

Apparently, City only offered Gundogan a one-year deal, with the option for another year.

Gundogan is said to have felt that this ‘1+1’ offer was a lack of respect.

An interesting claim about Ilkay Gundogan, as Barcelona get ready to announce midfielder

It is surely doubtful that Gundogan felt ‘disrespected’ by City and what they offered.

Maybe the £20 million star was a little disappointed. But disrespected is a strong word and Gundogan just doesn’t feel like the type.

You can understand City being reluctant to offer a 2+1 contract like Barca. As good as Gundogan still is, he is 32 and there was potential for him to start declining from next season onwards.

But then maybe you could argue that even if Gundogan started to decline on the pitch, he would still be worth having around for his leadership.

Gundogan will now leave the Etihad to embark on a new adventure.

And hopefully, there isn’t any bad blood between club and player. Because Gundogan is a City legend.
