Gareth Southgate has said that it is not an ideal situation that Kalvin Phillips is barely playing enough football for Manchester City.

As quoted by journalist Joe Bray, the England boss made this admission ahead of his side’s upcoming Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine and subsequent friendly against Scotland.

Gareth Southgate has now commented on how Kalvin Phillips’ lack of game time at Manchester City is not ideal.

Gareth Southgate says Kalvin Phillips’ Manchester City game time is ‘not ideal’

Branded as ‘intelligent’ by Pep Guardiola, while the 27-year-old would be buzzing to have won the treble in his debut season at City, he has been a non-factor during his time at the club so far.

Starting a mere two Premier League games last season and having played no minutes even this campaign, it seems like Pep Guardiola does not have much faith in him up until this point.

While Kalvin Phillips was selected by Gareth Southgate in his England squad, he has made an honest admission about his playing time at Manchester City.

“With Kalvin, it’s not ideal he’s not playing football. Declan Rice was the only England player to start at weekend as a single pivot. Kalvin is the next best to do that. Other players can do it but it’s not their best position.

Unlikely that Phillips’ game time will improve until he really steps up

Gareth Southgate seems to have rewarded Kalvin Phillips’ brilliant performances for England in the past but his luck may run out in the future if he continues to warm the bench at Manchester City.

However, that is easier said than done, with Rodri being the best defensive midfielder in the world and Mateo Kovacic looking like a reliable alternative in a deeper role as well.

With Matheus Nunes rumored to join City as well, perhaps he could well be deployed in the same role.

Unless Kalvin Phillips returns to his absolute best, it is unlikely that he will be granted even a serviceable number of minutes this season.
