Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey has admitted that he did not expect Cole Palmer to leave Manchester City in the summer.

At Chelsea, Palmer has exhibited his class, scoring his 10th goal in the Premier League this season during his side’s 4-2 defeat to Wolves.

In January, Chris Sutton claimed that Manchester City made a “mistake” by letting the Englishman leave the club.

Last year, even Sir Elton John admitted his frustration at City for not giving the 21-year-old enough minutes in the first-team.

Jacob Ramsey has admitted he was surprised to see Cole Palmer leave Manchester City

When quizzed about whether he expected Cole Palmer to leave Manchester City, especially having come through their academy, Jacob Ramsey admitted he was surprised at the time.

“No”, he replied in an interview with Sky Sports.

Ramsey continued, “I think maybe he said it himself that he was expected to go out on loan or something but they [Manchester City] said he had to get sold or stay.”

“But to be fair, I’m not surprised that he’s doing so well at Chelsea. Some of the games that we played together [at England Under-21 level] and some of the training sessions, his quality is top, man. He’s going to be a top player and obviously, he’s showing that right now.”

Most fans and pundits alike would have felt the same as Jacob Ramsey

Considering Palmer had scored in the Community Shield and the UEFA Super Cup, perhaps many would have expected him to kick on at Manchester City this season. But when Cole Palmer decided to cut ties with his boyhood club and join Chelsea in a deal worth £40 million (The Athletic) man, it was natural to be surprised like Jacob Ramsey was.

Whether Manchester City regret their decision for going ahead with the sale remains unknown.

But considering City are two points off the top of the league table with a game in hand while being in contention to win the FA Cup and the Champions League once again, it is not as if Palmer’s exit has severely affected their progress in any way, shape or form.

Whether the Sky Blues regret their decision in the long run will be interesting to discover, however.
