Jamie Carragher says Spain have a player who was actually better than Man City’s Rodri at Euro 2024

Jamie Carragher has made a claim about Rodri after England lost 2-1 to Spain on Sunday night.

The 28-year-old won the Player of the Tournament award — with Jan Vertonghen claiming after the Euro 2024 final that it is “confirmed” that he will win the Ballon d’Or.

Manchester City’s number 16 has gone from strength to strength and continues to prove why he is well and truly a one-of-a-kind midfielder.

Having won the European Championship with Spain, all Rodri is in need of is a World Cup winner’s medal to state that he has conquered football.

Jamie Carragher disagrees with Rodri winning Euro 2024 Player of the Tournament

Considering the four-time Premier League winner is in the prime of his career at 28 years of age, he still has plenty left in the tank to further progress his game.

Yet, as Rafael Benitez hinted, it is hard to find any flaws in Rodri’s game.

Several players are often widely slated for not being able to replicate their form at club level at the international stage.

The Manchester City maestro is certainly not one of those players.

Jamie Carragher, however, feels Fabian Ruiz had a superior Euro 2024 campaign to Rodri and deserved to win the Player of the Tournament award.

The pundit replied to a post on X about the former Atletico Madrid conductor that read: “Player of the Tournament without question. The best midfielder out there.”

Carragher retorted: “[Fabian] Ruiz was better in this tournament.”

Rodri was the right choice amongst a pick of great performers

Ultimately, this year’s European Championship did not have a single player who stood out above the rest.

Instead, several players had brilliant tournaments.

Rodri was one of them, alongside Ruiz, who Carragher felt was the best player at Euro 2024, Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams and others.

As a result, if the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder or any other player had won the award, it also would have been a fair call.

But simultaneously, Rodri too was in excellent touch through the tournament and ran the show for the team that won the competition; a feat that was rightly rewarded by the decision-makers.
